CBS exec: Katie Couric leaving anchor post
09:19 AM
Less than five years after making history as the first woman to anchor a network evening news broadcast, Katie Couric is leaving the CBS Evening News desk with plans to launch her own syndicated talk show. A CBS exec revealed the news to the Associated Press last night.
Couric's contract is up June 4 and she played coy during a recent appearance on The Late Show With David Letterman when discussion turned to the topic of her future plans. "Once you take that anchor chair, that's what you do," Letterman said on the March 22 show. Couric's response: "Really?"
Nothing about her departure has been finalized, but CBS rep Sonya McNair does acknowledge that the network has been communicating with Couric about the future. "We're having ongoing discussions with Katie Couric," McNair told the AP. "We have no announcements to make at this time. Until we do, we will continue to decline comment on rumor or speculation."
