Critic's Corner Weekend: 'Supernanny' signs off

By Robert Bianco, USA TODAY

After six seasons, ABC's Supernanny(tonight, 8 ET/PT) comes to an end ? and thank goodness.

There's room on TV for a host of genres and a horde of bad ideas, but there should never be a place for shows that exploit children's bad behavior for entertainment and profit, which is what Supernanny did despite claims of offering aid and comfort. Whether the parents involved were at the end of their ropes and desperately seeking help (most probably were), or merely yearning to be on TV, makes no difference.

When it comes to protecting children from the damage that can be done by TV exposure, ABC should and does know better. But it won't do better as long as viewers support shows like Supernanny for six seasons.

?Any Friday free time would be much better spent on Fringe (Fox, 9 ET/PT), which has been on a fun tear of late. And now Olivia is apparently channeling the spirit of William Bell? Come on, how can you not love that?

?Another series ends Sunday: HBO's Big Love(9 ET/PT) says a polygamous goodbye after five seasons.
