Man allegedly smashes Ford Explorer into parked big rig

LOS ANGELES - A man who may have been arguing with a woman passenger smashed a sport utility vehicle into the back of a parked big rig early today, injuring both of them, a police sergeant said.

The crash was reported at 2:19 a.m. at 30th Street and Vermont Avenue, said Sgt. O. Green of the Los Angeles Police Department's South Traffic Division.

The man and woman were possibly arguing inside a Ford Explorer before the man "started doing doughnuts," or driving in circles, then apparently stepped on the gas and crashed the SUV into the back of the big rig, Green said.

The man and the woman were both pulled from the SUV and taken to a local hospital, where the driver was listed in critical condition, said Sgt. Clarence Perkins of the LAPD's South Traffic Division.

The passenger was initially also listed as critical, but was upgraded to stable condition this afternoon, he said.
