LeAnn Rimes and Eddie Cibrian bucked tradition.

They got ready together on their wedding day, sipped champagne and jammed to Sir Mix-a-Lot's "Baby Got Back" before their 35 guests arrived for their surprise nuptials Friday night.

But to keep a hint of mystery, Rimes slipped away to another room when the time came to put on her wedding dress ? a handmade Reem Acra gown accessorized with sparkling jewelry.

"I was just in awe," Ermenegildo Zegna- clad Cibrian, 37, tells PEOPLE of seeing Rimes in her dress for the first time.
