As evidenced by True Blood's season 4 premiere Sunday night, a lot has changed since fans last saw Sookie Stackhouse and the residents of Bon Temps.

Spoiler alert: Major new plot points revealed below.

Sookie begins the episode in a glowing Eden-like fairyland that exists on an alternate plane and its own timeframe. There she meets her fairy godmother, Claudine ? and runs into her grandfather, whom she hasn't seen in 20 years (though he thought it was only the day before). The idyllic scene quickly turns sinister when an evil fairy chases Sookie, who narrowly escapes back into her own, human realm.

Once home, Sookie learns that although in fairyland only a few minutes passed, she's been missing for more than a year. Her brother Jason and everyone else presumed she was dead, likely at the hands of a vampire, and Jason has sold her house to an unknown company. And that's not the only big change since Sookie's been gone:

Jason Stackhouse, Sookie's brother, has become a full-fledged police officer. Formerly known for his insatiable libido and dim wits, Jason is now the responsible man about town ? so much so that it is he who keeps in check police chief Andy Bellefleur, who's developed an insatiable addiction to vampire blood.

Bill Compton has been pining away for Sookie. He shows up at her door the moment the sun goes down, but Sookie turns him away, saying she's still heartbroken by his betrayal (uncovered in last season's finale). Later, it's revealed that Bill, who is part of the PR push to revamp the image of vampires, has become the King of Louisiana. But can he be trusted?

Eric Northman is also employed in the pro-vampire PR machine, making them appear friendly and harmless to humans. He also still has Sookie in his sights: It was he who secretly purchased her house, and he aims to make Sookie belong to him, too.

Tara Thornton, Sookie's best friend, has ditched Bon Temps for New Orleans (after brief stops elsewhere) and is living under an assumed name, dating another woman and participating in staged female cage-fighting matches.

Lafayette Reynolds is still dating his boyfriend Jesus Velasquez, who introduces the reluctant Lafayette to a local coven of witches.

Sam Merlotte has taken up anger management classes ? with a group of other shape-shifters, who have dinner parties, then undress, turn into horses and go galloping in the woods.

Hoyt and Jessica have shacked up together, but are struggling to find domestic bliss as a mixed human-and-vampire couple.

Arlene Fowler, who last season was pregnant with her ex-boyfriend's baby, has given birth to a son she believes is pure evil. (Her ex was a serial killer from season 1.) Evidence of the baby's inherent malevolence? He tears the heads off Barbie dolls.
