LA PUENTE - A series of explosions shook an underground electrical vault in La Puente today, knocking out service to 3,200 Southern California Edison customers and prompting some brief evacuations.
The explosions occurred at 1:38 p.m. at North Del Valle Avenue and East Amar Road, according to Inspector Don Kunitomi of the county fire department.
About 30 homes were evacuated as a precaution, but the evacuations were canceled when Edison officials said there were no lingering safety concerns.
County firefighters initially ordered the evacuations because "we didn't understand why there were so many explosions," county fire Capt. Mark Savage said.
By rerouting power lines, service was restored to all but 600 customers, according to Steve Conroy of Edison.
The explosions caused "quite a bit of noise," he said, saying the problem could have been "an actual cable or a transformer," Conroy said.
