Man who runs youth boot camp facing criminal charges

PASADENA - A man who runs a boot camp for youths was jailed today for allegedly handcuffing a teenage truant, transporting the girl to a relative's house and demanding money.

Kelvin McFarland, 41, of Monrovia, is being held in lieu of $285,000 bail, while awaiting a June 13 hearing in Pasadena Superior Court to determine if there is enough evidence to require him to stand trial.

McFarland is charged with one felony count each of child abuse, kidnapping, false imprisonment by violence and extortion, along with one misdemeanor count of unlawful use of a badge.

He was arrested May 27 by Pasadena police detectives and pleaded not guilty last week.

McFarland, known by local youths as "Sarge," allegedly tried to persuade the 14-year-old's family to enroll the girl in his "Family 1st Growth Camp," a Pasadena/Altadena-based youth boot camp.

Police said they believe McFarland may have committed similar acts on other minors, and received illegal payments from parents or guardians. Anyone with more information on the case was urged to call police at 626-744-4241.
