Undersheriff Larry Waldie -- Baca's second in command -- retiring after 40+ years of service

Undersheriff Larry Waldie announced today that he will retire after more than 40 years of service with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

Waldie has been serving as second-in-comand to Sheriff Lee Baca for the last six years.

"He told me that it was time for him to retire, to pass the baton on," sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore said.

Whitmore said Baca and Waldie will meet next week to discuss his replacement, which hasn't been decided on.

Waldie's retirement will become effective "probably in the fall," Whitmore said.
