LAPD officers search for man allegedly involved in South LA drive-by shooting

LOS ANGELES - LAPD officers in the air and on the ground searched a section of South Los Angeles today for someone involved in a drive-by shooting that left a young man with a leg wound, police said.

The 25-year-old victim was shot at Broadway and Century Boulevard near the Harbor (110) Freeway around 10 p.m. Wednesday, said Sgt. Scott Stevens of the Los Angeles Police Department's Southeast Station. His condition this morning was stable, he said.

Officers in squad cars rushed to the scene, saw a vehicle being driven off and gave chase, soon catching up with it and arresting two men in their 20s, Stevens said.

But a third man managed to run away, triggering an overnight perimeter search that had a helicopter crew scanning the area with infrared technology designed to pick up body heat while on the ground, LAPD tracker dogs sniffed for the fugitive, he said.

The ground search took officers into backyards, poking into trash cans, after a resident reported a prowler, Stevens said.

At around 11 p.m. Wednesday, officers found a duffel bag near the Glenn Anderson (105) Freeway and Avalon Boulevard. Apparently discarded after the shooting, it contained two handguns believed to belong to the fugitive being hunted this morning, Stevens said.

Police did not immediately report a motive for the shooting.
