Local press photographers honor Daily News' Hans Gutknecht

Daily News staff photographer Hans Gutknecht was honored with multiple awards Saturday in the 75th anniversary Press Photographers Association of Greater Los Angeles photo contest.

Gutknecht received a 2nd place in the Portrait category, 3rd place in Best Fire photography and Honorable Mention in Feature.

KNBC-TV reporter John C�diz Klemack and Daily News staff photographer John McCoy, the chairman of PPAGLA, hosted the ceremony aboard the Queen Mary in Long Beach.

PPAGLA is also hosting a 75-year retrospective of images on the Queen Mary in a show that will run through May. Images made by PPAGLA members include several Pulitzer Prize photos taken by Nick Ut and David Hume Kennerly from the Vietnam War.

Earning PPAGLA still photographer of the year honors was Mark Zaleski from the Press-Enterprise in Riverside. Arturo Quezada from KMEX TV won television photographer of the year honors. The staff of KMEX TV earned 2010 Television Station of the Year.

Awards were also given to photographers at Los Angeles Daily News' sister newspapers. Will Lester from the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin was 2nd runner-up for Still Photographer of the Year.

Inland Valley Daily Bulletin photographers Thomas R. Cordova won a 2nd place in Best Animal photo, 3rd place in Photo Essay, and Honorable Mention in the Music and Performing Arts category. Jennifer Cappuccio Maher won First place in Sports, and Honorable Mentions in Animal photo and the News categories.
